Direct speech is the way of asking question or saying something in a normal and usually informal tone.
Indirect speech is the way of asking question or saying something in a formal and rather polite tone.

There are several ways of saying indirect speech from direct one, such as
- can you tell me...(for question)
- may I know...(for question)
- I wonder....(for question)
- I'm afraid....(for statement)

Example :
(direct speech)
A: Where is the bank?
B: Sorry, I don't know.

(indirect speech)
A: can you tell me where the bank is?
B: Sorry, I'm afraid I don't know.
