Letter is a written, typed or printed communication, sent in an envelope by post or messenger.

There are five parts of letter:

1. The heading => Heading can include your address and the date. For informal or casual letters, usually your address is not necessary.
2. The salutation (greeting) => Usually this starts with Dear_______ or Hi_______ depending how formal or how close you are with the recipient. The blank is for the person you are writing.
3. The body => Body of the letter contains the information you are writing in your letter.
4. The closing => Complimentary closing is last sentence before you are ending the letter. Some examples are: Sincerely, Your friend, Love, Very truly yours,
5. Your signature => Your name, under the complimentary closing

Dalam bahasa Inggris secara umum ada beberapa macam jenis surat, antara lain:

1. Personal letter merupakan surat yang ditulis dan ditujukan untuk keluarga, teman atau kerabat dekat. Surat ini seperti judulnya bersifat pribadi.

2. Social letter adalah contoh surat yang tidak resmi namun ditujukan kepada masyarakat umum. Tujuannya adalah mengucapkan selamat atas pencapaian atau perayaan seperti ulang tahun, pernikahan, dll.

3. Business letter merupakan jenis surat formal yang ditujukan untuk kepentingan bisnis. Bahasa yang digunakan juga formal dan sopan.
